adding new sand to old

thinking of adding a thin layer of grade 0 sand to my 5inch sand bed of mixed grade 3 and 1. is it possible? how am i going to this?

If you just pour in the whole tank will be cloudy. Would suggest you get a PVC pipe and pour in the PVC pipe bit by bit.....

Please remember to clean those unwanted metal on the new sand with a magnet before washing.

the last time i added new to old sand, i have found it very efficient by putting new sand into a 1.5 litre coke soft drink plastic bottle. cover the bottle with the cap.

then bring bottle into the tank, open the cap slowly, turn the bottle and fill up the sand bed. very fast, and will not cloud your tank.

try to siphon the top layer of the sand to remove any detritus, if not, by covering it will induce nitrates...
