Filter Media

Recommended Posts

hi all,

juz got a slump going, hopin to find out what media u guys use. I see alot of polycarbon filters ard, cheap stuff abt 3 bucks or so and activated carbon also, juz looks like black colored polycarbon. Are these these the stuff u guys use? Also, are ceremic rings recommended?

:thanks:

I think you might find it hard to find marine tanks using carbon filter. I personally would not add this and ceremic ring and bioballs (some argue bioballs useful). In fact my tank has no such filters. I use DSB & LR (biological filter) and a protein skimmer and regular water change to keep water quality.

totally agree with panlee...it's better to avoid too much mechanical filtration in a sump...it will only end up as a nitrate factory....i personally feel bio filtration is the best....add in tonnes of live rock and DSB....and with efficient skimming, it will be just fine...always get a skimmer AT LEAST twice the tank size... for example, if your tank's 50g, get a skimmer that is used for a 100g tank or even more...u can never overskim a tank...

hi all,

thanks for the replies. I'm planning on a refugrium actually but before the water enters the refugrium, i was thinking of puttin it thru some filter media. I thought most pple would incorperate some form of filter to add to the DSB and LR biological filtration as described by Dr. Ron Shimek.

actually i have an eheim Liberty 200 hang on filter , and i have a small 2ft tank, perhaps i shld do away with the filter media.

:thanks:

How much did you buy for the eheim liberty 200 hang on filter? and where?

I'm currently looking for a good hang on filter for my small 2ft tank.
