PH 8 to 9 too drastic?

didn't notice that this was posted...

anyway here is my story...

i have very high evaporation rate in my tank, about 3-4ltrs per day  (using 2 X profantic fans to cool my tank)...

i top up the water with kalk solution (ph 12)..everyday i will pour the kalk solution into the last compartment of my sump (where the return pump is). once poured in, the water in that compartment will be ph 9...after about 5-10mins, the whole tank's ph will rise from 8 to about ph 8.3-8.5...

my question is, rising the ph from 8 to 8.3-8.5 issit too drastic?? my neighbour told me that this will shock most of the fishes and might be the main reason y my sailfin has not recovered from the ich (although i feed like mad)... :(

his recommendation is to drip the kalk solution slowly...but i dun have space to add another drip container which needs to be 3-4ltr big...another solution is to use a tubby but no money...

so need to check with experts here whether the fluctuation is too wide?

p/s: my tap water has ph 9.4..issit normal??

thanks in advance... :thanks:

ur neighbour is right. pouring kalk solution right into a tank might caused pH shock to the LS. dripping kalk at a slow rate is the best way out. i'm sure u can find a little space for this in ur sump area.

pH of water from waterworks is usually between 7.0 to 9.0.
