Noisy Eheim Pump

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I have just setup my marine tank and I am having 2 new Eheim pumps (model 1260 & 1262) that draw water from my sump up into the main tank. The vibrating sounds from the 2 pumps are quite annoying and I can even hear it in my bedroom. My sump is located within the cabinet. Is there any ways to screen off this vibrating sounds?

Thank you.

Could it be due to improper mounting / placement of the pumps that is causing the vibrating hum?

Otherwise, you can also try checking if their impellar assembly is secure.

I'll be concerned if there's excessive vibration, as it may affect the structural integrity of the glass over time.

I simply placed the eheim pump on the base of the sump. I am thinking of getting some filter wool and placed it underneath the pump so that some damping is achieved. Even so, I think some humming sound can still be heard. Anything to placed at the surrounding (walls of the cabinet) to absorb the sound?

Thanks. :)

something is wrong here, coz my 1260 and 1262 are placed out of the sump, and very very quiet too. check your connection pipes and also water level. not enough water or gas pumping into the pump will coz vibrating noise.

Well, I don't really mean that the humming sound is very loud. It is just that it is audible especially at night. Talking about air in the pump, how do you get the air out? I placed my pump inside the sump itself and the water level is much higher than the pump, is there a possibility that air get in? However I have tried a few times, shutting down the pumps to do some adjustments and the backflow is quite significant and bubbles can be seem coming out of the pumps. Is this the reason why the pump is humming?

Once the pump starts running, all the air will be expelled. The sound is due to vibrations of the pump against the glass tank. It's just that it's so quiet at night that it seems loud.

Well, if you're sure the pumps and their assemblies are fine, then perhaps you just have good hearing :)

Anyway, I remember back in my audiophile days when I use to stick paper egg trays on the wall, you can try that on your cabinet.

;) Hmm.... actually I am thinking of using sheets of styrofoam and place it next to the sump to screen out the humming sound. So you guys think that it will help?

:thanks:

I think maybe your pump is spoilt. My ehiem has been used in and out of the sump before. Never have much sound though the tank is placed beside my room. the flow of water in my case is louder than the pump.

:( But I have just gotten the 2 new eheim pump previous week!
