H&S Skimmer

Hi,

I am using a 150-2001 H&S. I am getting a lot of foam and some sludge forming on the neck but the foam does not seem to spill into the container and its very dry.

Ques: For fellow users of this skimmer, how do you tune the skimmer to get wet skimmate ? I have tried closing the output pipe to almost 3/4 clsoed but still very dry skimmate.

Where do you tune the water level to ?

yup, it is not recommended to adjust the pipe.

I have tried opening it full but still cannot get wet skimmate. Do you guys restrict the air feed ?

one way is to restrict the air feed the other is....whats your water level wherein you place the skimmer in the sump compartment ? the other is to adjust the outflow pipe.

Hi,

My skimmer is sitting in my sump where the water level of the sump is 20 cm above the base of the skimmer. I am seeing a lot of foam at the top of the foam funnel but the foam gets stuck there and does not get pushed out into the cup.

i reduce the air flow to get finer bubbles,

then adjust the outflow till the bubbling level reaches about

1/3 up the neck.

ifyou want it wetter, tune it higher.

it usually takes a few days to break in, then start to really get dirty

just curious ....why wetter?

personally i prefer it dryer, wetter is just excess water.

what you want to remove is the think gunk that accumulates

in the neck

Thanks for your reply. Dry skimmate makes it very difficult to clean. Wet ones just pur away the liquid and start skimming again. Will try it tonight and see if I get wet ones.

a skimmer basically removes Dissolved Organic Compounds, or DOCs from the water, by this phenomenon of air bubbles. it has been found that air, when bubbled into water at a certain velocity or rate, actually liberates the dirt contained within the water. this air bubble floats to the surface of the water, and "pops", thereby releasing the dirt on top of the water column.

I think I got the jist of it. anybody care to re-enforce or correct me? (=

it is the surface tension of the bubble that brings the DOCs up the tube to be deposited into the collection cup. DOCs are the beginning of the nitrogen cycle as they become ammonia, then nitrites and then nitrates. by skimming as much DOC out as possible you cut down the other nitrogen cycle products and improve the water quality.

wet skimmate is easier to clean but if you neglect it for a few days it can overflow and create one kind of mess. unless of course you pipe it off into a plastic bottle or something
