Coral Beauty

Hello reefers,

Need some advice. I notice that the corals tend to 'close' up when the lights are turn off at night. So actually that means that the corals only open when we the lights are turned on.

Well in order to really enjoy them when they are opened and in their beauty, you will have to wait till they really open up after about 2 hours when the lights are turned on.

Is there any other way to ensure that my corals open up "permanently"? To have this would also have to mean that I need to turn on my lights 24x7 right?

hmm................

LOL I saw the title of this thread i thought you were talking about the angelfish "coral beauty" :D

Be teachable always, nobody has a monopoly on wisdom. But learn to distinguish "fact" from "opinion".

In theory, is the lights are off, you won't see much in the tank anyway... :P

Seriously speaking, Corals and LS are living creatures and they need a day/night cycle and yes, just like us humans, their activity is different during the day and night.

The best you can do to better enjoy the beauty of your tank is to decide when it's day and when it's night. My tank lights up at 4pm so that by 6-7PM, when I get back form work, the tank is nice and the corals are fully open and lights go off at midnight. ;)

Corals can't be open 24 hrs. Corals such as LPS enable their feeding mode at night, whereby tentacles come out to snare zooplankton and other foods available from the water. If you leave your lights on 24/7 it will be only a matter of time before the coral bleaches. They'll be making too much carbohydrates while receiving little or no protein in the form of meaty foods. You'll end up with white corals that are sweet to the taste.

Always something more important than fish.
