Here's the trick. Try your best to hand carry that item. If you are lucky, they won't weigh your carry on baggage. If they do realise that your hand carry items are too heavy at the gate, then they will force you to take it out and check it into the hold. When they do that, they don't charge excess baggage fee. ;)

Cut and pasted... :)

Adults and children aged 2 years and above travelling in Economy Class are entitled to free baggage allowance of 20 kg (44 lb) per person. Infants are entitled to free baggage allowance of 10kg (22 lb) per infant.

PPS Club Members are entitled to 100% more free baggage allowance.

KrisFlyer Elite Gold members are entitled to 20kg of extra baggage allowance to all destinations except USA and Canada. For flights to/from USA and Canada, KrisFlyer Elite Gold members are entitled to one additional piece of checked baggage.

Please note that it is always useful to put identification tags or labels onto your baggage. It is also important to ensure that you do not pack any medication, travel documents or valuables in your checked baggage.

Cabin baggage allowance

For your comfort and safety on board the aircraft, Economy Class customers are allowed one piece of cabin baggage, weighing not more than 7 kg (15 lb). The sum of the three dimensions of each cabin baggage must not exceed 115cm (length + width + height).

If the walk through x-ray detected the Iwaki pump, then security will often ask you to take it out and open for inspection. They may view it as a dangerous item and if they think its ok, then re-check in else have to off load. Note: any item containing magnet is considered as a dangerous goods and need special packaging and storage in the aircraft hold. They are more careful nowadays esp after 911.

Anyone can advise?

Cost per kg depends on distance.

What Tanzy said is true, once inside the airport when checking into the gate brfore boarding the plane and if they don't allow you to hand carry, they will take it away from you and give you a receipt but you don't have to pay.

In the US for both international and domestic flights, the total weight of all your bags are not so important (not sure about SIA) but if you have a baggage that exceeds 30kg (allowance for additional a few more kgs), you have to take the items out to reduce the weight. I had to pay a fixed amount of US$109 for my 45kg bag as I do not have any choice to.
