Bro,

If you budget is tight, buy second skimmer in good condition. a number of reefers are selling their ev-120 > due to upgrading. Thus it is better to get ev-240 skimmer. Go to our Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop forum to find cheap 2nd-hand skimmer !!! Believe budget of s$100 can get some 2nd china skimmer from our Sell off/Pasar Malam Shop forum.!! Start a new topic and sell any reefers who want to sell their skimmer. state your budget too.

But bro, second-hand EV skimmer will cost over s$400. and you will need a good pump for it too. If you has small budget, go for china brand. Some of their units are good.

But a skimmer > is an one of main and most important piece of equipment in marine tank!! Save the amount of water > you need to change as a good skimmer helps youto keep water clean and reduce pollution!!!!!

rycin is selling his red sea prizm at selling forum.

His message:: >Decommissioning my tank as I'll be posted overseas for 2 years.

Selling my Red Sea Prizm Skimmer. Believe it's one of the most efficient skimmer available. Suitable for reef aquariums up to 100 gallons/400 liters. A hang-on skimmer that saves valuable water space, I used it even for my 2 ft tank. Its convergent-divergent reaction chamber with "triple-pass" air flow effectively enhances skimming time; 18-blade "turbotjet" air injector -generates a constant & homogenous stream of micro-bubbles. Unlike traditional skimmer, there's no maintainance needed to change the air-stone.

The skimmer has been used for about a year & half. Market price is around $210. Letting it go at $80.

Red Sea prism - i still have selling at 120 - 130 (someone almost reserved it) used for about 4 months (now laying around).....

Yes skimmer is useful as it will increase the redox potential - unless you are very good at balancing the biological filtration in your system (takes time and effort and monitoring).

I personally know someone who keeps a FOWLR tank with many fishes without skimmer. Fish all with him for at least 6 months and pui-pui...

Can't comment on correctness, just reporting what I saw but have to admit I am surprised/shocked when I saw it.

a skimmer is not entirely necessary, as evident by some skimmer-less tanks. but the delicate and intricate balance of water chemistry within a skimmer-less tank is something I wouldn't advice a lot of people to take. unless you have the patience and time to baby sit your tank everyday. if not, a skimmer is relatively plug, play, and have ease of mind. well...sort of. :P

This could be of help.

From what we hv read so far, skimmers definitely are of help and important to a reef tank but its seems quite a number of FOWLR are running without skimmers but the other filtration systems that these FOWLR's use must be real good.

After all the above response, you would be a bit surprised to read the information below. But I guess it does make sense.

Hope this helped.

Most people on for 24 hrs daily - the power consumption is negligible (for red sea) you can dun use skimmer but your balancing for the biological filtration + monitoring must be good ie.you must be skilful.

I use weipro 2011 skimmer with weipro WH-1000 powerhead. Total cost is less than $100. My tank is 4 ft x 18" x 18". Bought them at aquast*r at yishun. The price is the cheapest liao. Cheaper than Rebo*n and Petma*t.

even with a skimmer, you will still need to moniter your fishes and shower them with TLC.... <_<

but i do believe if FOWLR, u can go without skimmer as long as you do regular water changes....however, personally i don't think you will able to keep the more sensitive fishes that requires good, clean and highly oxygenated water.....

anyway, its a expensive hobby, you will need to balance your needs carefully....and in my opinion, with competition heating up...there will be more and more choices with cheaper and cheaper price....if you can go skimmerless, then go skimmerless and observe the well being of your fishes....but when you have save enough and decide to take the next step...go for the best that your piggy bank can afford.... :D ...really regartted buying a lot of unneccessary things.... :nc:
