my tank has been running since april without skimmer....

i have about 11 small fishes in my tank...so far no problem with nitrate and phos...hehehehe...lucky me...but must change water loh...i change about 20% every 2 weeks...i do have some funny algae growing, not hair algae but long strains of grass-like algae...looks like turtle weed...so far no cyano also...heng heng...

pls dun misunderstand my 1st paragraph...skimmer is a must-must...i'm just doing my RnD and building my own skimmer...RobSKim Mini 120/600...still waiting for my laser cut...

most importantly whats your budget? And certain things to take note of... electricity? Beckett is good but very power consuming... imagine 100w+ x 24 hrs compared to needlewheel which is only 30w+.. Do more research and see which one fits into your budget..

IMHO, skimmer is a "MUST" as it helps to remove nutrients from the water. Otherwise, we will algae problem. ;)

I prefer a Beckett skimmer, the BIGGER, the BETTER :D . But most importantly, your budget

My budget is less than $100 and i prefer a hang on skimmer to save space cos my tank is small. Any recommed? :thanks:

You can go to market place and see whether any reefers are selling off their red sea prizm skimmer, alternatively, you can get a weipro skimmer. Both are hang on skimmers and within your budget.

 Is red sea prizm skimmer or weipro skimmer good enough for a 3ft X 1.5ft X 1.5 ft tank? Pls advice...Thanks

I suppose with your budget a weipro is good enough as your is a FOWLR however it is NOT necessary to use a skimmer unless it is a reef tank. If you can afford it, why not.

Anyway you have too many fishes, esp too may different species of clowns, expect some chasing and fin nipping. Angels ar not easy esp bi colour for a new tank, if I were you I wait for at least 6 months before introducing angels.

Your LS is way too much for a 3ft. You need to get their gunk out of the water or your water quality will be compromise. It is however possible to keep so much LS provided you get a higher end skimmer. Weipro is good but not good enought for ur tank.

Do consider coming out with a little more for at least a macro. Or few hundred more for H&S or AquaEV series. :D

the bioload seems very high i must say..

measured the nitrates and phos recently?

shld get as high end as possible...

work out a budget and get the best loh..

but a beckett really does wonders...but the bill is crazy i must admit..

it depends on your skimmer, your filtration and the type of fishes u intend to keep..

like for tangs...maybe 1 or 2 is the max cos they need space to swim..but most pple will keep more...but do use a powerful skimmer then..

maybe 6 small fishes and 1-2 small tangs?

but tangs do grow big fast..

so do weigh your options...

I personally know someone who keeps a FOWLR tank with many fishes without skimmer. Fish all with him for at least 6 months and pui-pui...

Can't comment on correctness, just reporting what I saw but have to admit I am surprised/shocked when I saw it.

you really should give a bigger budget for your skimmer. the reason being that skimmers are actually one of the most important things ever for a marine tank...helps to keep it clean and everything. an increase of $100 to $300 will be able to buy you a good and decent second hand skimmer. do consider.

:) Is RedSea Prizm Protein Skimmers up to 90 gallons good enough?

Pls advice.. :thanks:
