Don't forget that if too much acetate is present in the water it gives an artificially high reading for alkalinity because, even though out test kits seem to measure dKH (carbonate alkalinity) but in reality, it's measuring total alkalinity which will include acetate, borates, bicarbonates and carbonates.

As Barracuda found out that calcium acetate can be overdosed to the point that calcium is at astronomical levels but the bacteria in the tank is saturated and unable to break down the acetate to bicarbonate.

I have not encounter serious issues yet with my current dosing regiment.... but will take heed of the information posted....

Hmmm... Current SPS does show tremendous growth rates since the dosing started and my Cal and Alk levels seems fine.... hmmmm, maybe the readings I'm getting are already screwed!!!!...

Will keep you guys posted if anything happens...... :)

after reading this thread, i would like some conclusions.

for toping up with approx 1.5 litres of water, is this appropriate.

1. Add 1/2 teaspoon of Reefez Kalkwasser to container

2. Add 2 teaspoons of Vinegar to container

3. Mix it and let it settle

4. 1 hr after lights out, start dripping.

please advise.

How should the kalk and vinegar be mixed?

I discover different method get different kind of residue from the kalk powder.

So which is the coorect step?

kalk + vinegar + water

or

kalk + water + vinegar

or

water + vinegar + kalk

ah ha. found a useful article here

Dosing Kalk with Vinegar

Following the link, recently did the following:

Add 1/2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon (15ml) of Vinegar.

Add up to 1 L of Distilled Water.

Starts to slow drip during evening (1drop/5 sec) into my Quarantine Tank.

However, it caused the death of my PBT. :(

The PBT is doing well before dosing, feeding well on pellets, very healthy.

Think must be the dosing that caused the death.

Any bros know the possible reasons??
