Green algae on SPS

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

having problems in keeping my SPS, 1stly, they hardly have polyps extension... not sure about at night, but day time I do see any polyp extension, wat could be the problem?!

Also, notice a bit of green algae growing on my new monti, wat's the problem?

My water parameters :

Amm : 0

No2: 0

No3: 5ppm

Ca : 350ppm

Magnesium : 1130ppm

dkh: 10

Phosphate : undetectable

All my previous SPS dun seem to do too well... hardly any polyp extension most of the time... :(

People do not plan to fail; Often they just fail to plan...

Wat I do to prevent myself from tearing my hair out... My stress remedy...

Bro, SPS need very high flowrate and it must be of an indirect flow and not being blasted directly by a PH.

Also, CA needs to be at least 400 and Mg needs to be 1200 (3 x CA).

Whats your Ph and Salinity like?

I have a tunze 6060 blowing at it.... about 15 inches away... currently trying to rise my Ca and magnesium.... PH should be around 8.3 ( measured a week ago ) SG= 1.024....

Btw, is the PH and SG important factors? I thought as long as they are within range can liao... :)

i have the same problem with some aglae growing but the problem disappear after i maintain my Cal and KH ....at 420 - 460 and 12 dKH . the monti starts turning to a brighter orange ...

And also your flow -it matters alot.

Hope it helps.

Hmm... anyone else got the same experience? Is 12dkh very important? seems to me alot of people who keeps SPS got pretty high dkh  ...

bro, one thing for sure.......low KH will cause tissue loss and then the algae will try to grow on it........facing this problem 3 weeks ago (5 DKH).........now the sps getting better.

I notice white hard stuffs on the tank glass, suspect precipitation, test and found my Calcium was 540ppm & Alkalinity 5 DKH which cause the precipitation and Ionic imbalance.

To remedy, I did a 30% water change & dripped Magnesium(4 teaspoon each day) for 3 days then Reef builders carbonate hardness(4 teaspoon each day) till KH increase from 5dkh to 10dkh. Every 2 days I check my Ca and KH level.

Now its good, Ca 460ppm DKH 10. Mg I do not know cos no test kit, I did not dose any Mg since I started 7mths ago, so I presume must be low.
