6" DSB in Refugium

Hi,

My friend has a 6" dsb in his refugium, with macroalgae "planted" on it. After 7months, only the top 0.5" has turned abit brownish. The remaining 5.5" remains "pure and clean". Is this normal while waiting for the DSB to mature (which I understand will take at least 1 year)? There are only a few turbo snails in the refugium. Water from main tank passes through mechnical filtration and protein skimmer before reaching the refugium.

Fyi, the sand are of grade 0 (90%) and 1.

Anyone can advise?

Thanks,

:peace:

The brownish bit is probably just cyano or diatoms, nothing to indicate that the DSB is working. Your nitrate levels will determine if the DSB is working properly. If you are wondering whether if your DSB will turn black, then don't worry, it's only a matter of time.

Black doesn't mean bad. It just means hydrogen sulphide is being produced due to anaerobic conditions. Just don't disturb the layer and release the hydrogen sulphide because it is toxic in large quantities.

Then how? just leave it there? someday, it'll be disturbed one way of the other and viola hydrogen sulphide will be released.

make sure you disconnect your sump when that day comes...
