How to differentiate between the sailfins?

Hi guys,

I noticed that there are lots of juv. sailfin tangs around lately and I want to get a Zebrasoma Desjardinii. Since the juv. of Z. Desjardinii and Z. Veliferum are almost identical, how do I differentiate between the two?

hi bro, i used to keep the red sea and pacific sailfin b4. the diference from what i can see is that the pacific sailfin is brighter in colour and the the pattern of the strips is more to straight lines....kinda of neat whereas the red sea sailfin strips are more complicated...dun think u can keep both species in the same tank as they are like arch enemy...cannot even stand the sight of each other..hence sold my red sea sailfin away.however one alone seem to be able to live well with other tanks,,,currently i have a yellow, purple and pacific sailfin tank in my4 ft...they are like brothers..always swimming together....

3 very distint different between the both of them is

- Pacific Sailfin yellow tail fin

- Red Sea Sailfin much more beautiful face features (that is if you look close enough)

- PRICE different (but I guess I don't have to tell you this)

Where did you see the LS? care to share? I saw 2 close to 5" size @ Reborn last week but i prefer smaller size.

desjardini has spots on it's face amd a dark coloured tail.. Veliferum only has bars on the face and body and it has a yellow tail.

Coral farm got many of the Desjardinii. There was a time when I had to hunt high and low but now there's so many there waiting for you to go choose. Small and medium sizes avaliable too.

actually desjardin atngsare very common not only red sea have them.. idian ocean have them too

If you still can't differentiate them after reading the above. Guess the other features to look out for would be Triangle and Oval sailfin on them.

the easiest distinct feature is their tails lah... veliferum=lightcoloured or yellow tail

desjardinii= dark coloured tail

but i was told that the young of pacific and red sea sailfin is alike ... is this true ?
