Contrary to wat everyone says abt using a stronger pump. I have recently tried using a weaker pump.

I used a Dymax 1800 on a 2014, the results are astonishing. The bubbles produced are very fine and the skimate is beautiful. It broke-in in less than a day!

Previously i used a Dymax 2500 on the 2014 but i found that the bubbles at the top are rather big and the water in the main reactor very turbulent. The skimate of course is nothing much but very wet foam. After looking at proper bubble size from LFS's and my new 2nd hand macro skimmer, i decided to downsize the pump.

I think i could be because of weipro's small chamber dia, that does not allow a larger skimming volume/a larger pump. The 2014 is abt the same as the 2011 except that it allows a longer contact time for the bubbles.

I also have a 2011 running with a Dymax 1200, but the water is too turbulent and the bubble size is too big. Thinking of down sizing but have no extra smaller pump to experiment.

The placement of the skimmer also matters. i.e. the skimmer submerged in the sump watwer, skimmer placed partially submerged in the sump water, skimmer placed outside the sump. This is due to the diff in vertical height the pump is working when the skimmer is placed differently thus resulting in different flowrate.

Cool huh!@ :D:D
