Essentially, I understand that the purpose of a plenum is to create a thin space of void water in your DSB to promote anaerobic bacteria growth (for nitrate export)...

I heard of people using mesh, acrylic and stuff just to create that void space and yet strong enough so it will not collapse under the weight of the LRs...

I know it is a crazy idea... but what about using CD covers? Essentially, they are made of plastic, there's already a void space there... strong some more....

The diff between the effectiveness of a plenum and a DSB is: *tada*... none!

You only have to spend a lot more time setting up a plenum and there's a risk of the layer collapsing and you get a.... *tada*... DSB! ;)

You probably have to sacrifice more tank depth for a plenum system too.

IMO, why bother?

My friend (not a reefer) juz casually said technically can use CD covers lah... this happens when I was sharing with him on anaerobic bacteria, DSB & Plenum...

Thot it is a crazy idea... but u know great ideas always start from refined crazy ideas...

Plenums have been known to be a nutrient sink. They essentially trap phosphates and nitrates. pH of the water in the plenum is much lower than the water in the main tank. If this water somehow escapes into the main system it would be disastrous.

Always something more important than fish.
