Air pumps will increase the quantity of air into your pump, the bubbles will be bigger since the pump is force to chop more air. The pump capacity is fixed, so there will be a limited amount of air that can be chopped. Those unchop air will form bigger bubbles inside your reaction chamber of the skimmer :-)

That's the reason why sometimes when we reduce the air intake, the bubbles are infact smaller.

Best is to use natural venturi draft from the suction of the pump to draw in the maxmum amount of air it can take so the bubbles will be constant sizes.

To improve the bubbles sizes, you might wan to look more into the impeller design and speed of the pump.

Hmmm, there is one skimmer at Bio-Ocean Aquarix using an airpump to force more air into the venturi valve to get better peformance because the thicker foam mixture.

Generally what Eric said is true...you have to play around with the amount of air you can inject into a needlewheel pump and you have to see the impeller design too.

From what I discover, by reducing the air to the needlewheel, the output of the pump becomes higher as the pump suck in more water instead of air.

I will get cheapo air pump to try.

Your pump will calvitate & eventually airlock the impeller if you introduce too much air..........unless you use a powerful pump.
