i also want to know.

need to change my return pump. using the extrema now. 2500L/h, not strong enough.

was thinking of the quietone 4000 high head.

its 185 bucks though.

how much is the eheim one? ;)

dont think weipro could do the job.... it depends how tall is your return pipe and how many elbow is used. lets say the height of your piping is 5' + 4 units of elbow used. each elbow will increase the presure of another 1/2' so your total headloss would be around 7'.... look at your presure chart on the weipro box. how much flow are you left will a 7'???

dun go for quietone pump, i had a quietone6000, the flow after headloss is the same as eheim1262, dun based on the diagram on the box , its not accurate.... eheim will be a better choice though its only 3400L/H

Some websites recomend 6 x total volume of water(include sump)

200L x 6 = 1200L/hr

I have test and found 10x waterflow to be better if your sump design can take it. 2000L/hr

Next select the pump considering Vertical head loss & fittings loss

For weipro3000 2300L/hr 2.0m, you will get only abt 1000L/hr

I reconmend for abt 1.2m head loss,

Long Lasting/Low heat : Aquabee3000 giving you 1600L/hr

: Sicce Extrema giving you 1600L/hr

Long lasting : Eheim 1260 giving you 1400L/hr

Cheap: Dymax2500 giving you 1200L/hr

Good value : Rio2100 giving you 1300L/hr

Or if you insist on the high heat producing weipro

go for a WH4000 giving 1250L/hr or even WH5000

For ryan

Quietone4000 highhead is 120W!! not reconmended for that price

I rather you go for a MD40 at 80W 3120L/hr 4m

Or Ocean runner 3500 3500L/hr 3.3m 65W if you have the cash

If want cheap...go for Dymax 5000 or Weipro WH6000

hey thanks for replying man.

think i'll go for the MD 40.

but what about the pipe size?

and the end of the pipe? should it be like a rainbar/spraybar? or just as big as the pipe? or small to increase the speed of the waterflow ?

RIO 32HF is good for budget & can achieve a great turnover rate........i switching my Hailea 6550 (5500l/hr) for 2 x Rio 32HF soon.........mine is also 3ft tank but slightly more volume 300L.

hi ryan,

IMHO, i think a RIO 20HF should suffice, but again, it depends on ur tank size (which i assume is a 3 footer), what u wanna keep, whether ur overflow box can handle such a return, etc......

Wah Eric!!

2 x 7300L/Hr?! You sure? mine also abt 300L

Think that might be too much flow

For ryan, Rio is also a good buy. Reconmend 20HF

Where to get this pump, does anyone know? i only know of eaqua

Do consider an external pump to reduce heat added into your tank.

Return pump is one of the most imp equipment. Get a good one

Hehehe 14600L/hr / 300L = 48 times turnover rate an hour..............that will be ideal for a reef tank IMO :-) Of cos minus off the headloss etc........the turnover rate maybe only abt 40times.........still acceptable lah

I have found splitting the overflow pipe into multiple outlets in your sump can help to cope with more flow :P

All this will be next year plan..........now I need to save up for my CR and T5 supplement first.

i'm getting the 32hf...

think it should be alright as the tank is 1.6m above the ground and so pump will have to pump to that height and go through many elbows along the way.

if its too powerful then i will pump it throught the chiller before going to the main tank.

cowgum: can get it from our sponsor seaquest.

Add a ball valve for the inlet to the chiller and another ball valve for the return pump outlet just before it reaches to the main tank........that way you can regulate the flow according, like what fuel said, too much flow to the chiller might damage it.
