Question on sps RTN/STN

Its commn behaviour among certain species of sps. During day dive, one will notice there are very little or no polyps extension at all but during nite dive u will c great polyps extension. ;)

Always chk for polyps extension when u r buyin them frm LFS. If they show good polyps extension in the sale tank but little or no extension back hm. Give it a couple of days else fault could lies with the way u intro ur sps, its placement, amount of flow in tat area, water conditions....But do note, little or no polyps extension doesn't mean tat sps is not healthy. ;)

There are 2 types of person, those that chose learn n do it rite the first time and those tat chose to learn it the hard way.

i have a 3 SPS that does not seems to have any polyps extension...but they still retain the color that they where.....brown with slight purple...it has been weeks already.....so are they dead?

smell them, u can judge by doing so........ if it is healthy, it should hv a sweet scent. if not, it will give off something like a burning rubber smell.

shake it a little in the water, if u c tissues starts to fly off, then sayonara to ur sps liaoz.

that's the way i judge.

juz me 2 cents. ;)

Lightningstrike... on the contrary, a healthy SPS should have have little smell.

IME, the strong sweet smell is also a sign of unhealthy SPS, similar to the stinky smell. Don't know if fellow SPS reefers agree with me on this.

Anyway, this thread has gone off topic at least twice... so let's not talk about polyp extensions here except in a new thread about it?

Thanks!

:thanks: guru ...

Well, I'm going to frag the brown part off the main colony.

Can see the polyn's extention from other frag.

The frag is luminous green under Actinic.

but, the brown off frag did not grow at all. Think it K.O leow. :cry2:

Will frag it off tonight.

It could have turned brown due to lack of light or some other factors.

You don't have to frag the healthy brown parts of the colony unless you intend to frag it off to place it in an area of better light or water circulation.

Fragging should not be done to corals which are highly stressed or you may lose the entire colony.

That colony looks almost completely RTNed. Did any of your frags survive?

Do you have any other sps in your tank or is this your first?

Your tank may not be ready for sps. Check out the following link for more info on keeping sps (if you haven't already). It will give you an idea of the basic requirements to keep sps.

Most importantly, your water parameters need to be ideal.

Your lights (2x 24W T5) are inadequate for keeping sps. What T5 tube combination do you have?

Hi Danano,

The others frag is still doing well. Other frags polys still entending.

ONLY that few frags with brown tips.

currently having 2x 24Watts Aquaz Blue Pro & 1 actinic 13 watts ZooMed.

SPS placed just right below the light.

If my current lighting is inadequate for keeping sps

How about with additional 2 PL's 55 Watts 50/50

will this adequate??

Btw, how to tell it's RTD'ed/DEAD !!!! :(

& what is the light combination you having on ur gorgeous tank? :peace:

:thanks:

Lighting is but one important component. After looking at the thread on 'keeping sps', do you feel that you and your tank are sps ready?

Perhaps you could share with us a picture of entire setup. Btw, not sure if you mentioned it earlier, but how long has your tank been up?

Take a closer read... I shared a little about lighting here... ;)

Hi Danano,

The tank setup is 1.5 year loew.

Added back my 2x 55watts 50/50 10KK Aqualux PL last night.

Photoperiod

2x Aquaz 24Watts 20KK will "ON"" at 7.30am - 8PM (manual control)

follow by 2x Aqualux 55watts 10KK from 1PM till 10PM (Timer)

Sump light will "ON" from 7PM - 7.30AM

Danano, keep seaching for the KK from SRC's TOTM under lighting.

can't fine it after many times of reading.

Well, at last, the keyword " ATI Aquablue Special T5s ".

Which is a 11KK bulk. :D:D

Attached another pic of the SPS taken last night.

Hope it mean something to fellow guru ;);)

Hi guys,

:thanks:

The earlier pic was overexposed, hence the look of RTN. :P

The colony looks ok and don't worry about the tips, probably damaged due to poor placement. It should recover given ideal conditions.

Btw, what colour is the colony supposed to be?

Its a milk ( off-white ) colour colony, hence the whitish look of the colony... :)

Just to share another pic of the same colony frag that extending. ;)

The brown tips frag was there when I got it for another reefer.

Will it recover if well taken care off?

:thanks:

NICE! just bought from RAV-65 one rite? I believe it will be a beauty when it recovers.........maybe ur water has too many nutrients plus ur lights not strong enough thus causing the browning..........give it a few weeks, it might colour up........if still continue to brown up, you can consider selling the colony to me.......I luv to collect brown sps and watch them colour up.

p/s: I notice the algae growing on the tips........is ur flow sufficent?

Eric

Fellow guru..

Thanks very much for advise..

Lucky it was not STN/RTN !!

Will try to ad more light and return pump for better circulation.

Keep my eyes open for the water parameter too.

Bro lightningstrike, What should I do to the cyano?

Brush it "OFF" :o

Use this to blow it off............very effective :-)

Can also double the usage as a LPS target feeder........
