Hi all!!

just to share some things with u guys!!

yesterday! a friend of my told me that a contractor who did her friend's house is doing a marine tank for them too. But she came to ask for clarification from me after hearing wat the contractor say.

"put salt water into the tank, after a few days when the water reduce by 10% add fresh water to top up...."

still nothing wrong with this statement!

" when the water reduced by 10% again due to evaporation, ADD SALT WATER. And from then on .. only top up with salt water .. dun ever add fresh water again"

how does this statement sounds..?

CRAZY rite..?

that is wat happen in dead sea, salt water keep going in and evaporate... until one fine day... the water is too salty even for salted fish.

contractors/consultant like these are all over the streets cheating money from ppls telling them that they will set up the tank for them and give all the wrong info ..

i think these ppls have to be stopped.

What do you propose?

Shoot them?

More seriously, the only way to counter this is through education; this site is an excellent example of how to go about having a marine set-up successfully.

Unfortunately not everyone researches (personally I spent close to a year reading up thru books and the net before even starting), thus the only other way is to perhaps ensure that the LFSs themselves educate their customers (or potential customers) - here again, not every LFS is knowledgeable; they are after all running a business and not a hobby - the only way to encourage LFSs is to try to only patronise the responsible ones...this will weed out the less knowledgeable ones over time.

But unlike my (joking only!) first sentence, we cannot prevent contractor from saying anything, as they are not even in the industry! :(

Just my $0.02 worth pls. ;)

I agreed. The only way is to educate ourselves.

I am a lazy bum who used to take lots of advise from LFS. Some are good but most are bad. I end up losing fishes and corals. Hence, I am now reading up on stuff myself.

Rockfish. I think the best thing to tell your friend is ask them to read up before starting.

i have advised my friend to maybe let them make his fish tank but do the setting up himself... and OF COZ .. i promoted our one and only SRC to him and ask him to read up..

i did told him that if he wants to just buy fishes and dump in the tank and not going to look after them .. then dun start this hobby...

wat i think is that.. we should extend our help to those that truely want to start this hobby.. and discourage those that are not.

and maybe if u know this ppls well enough u can help them with the start up.. and not the contractors take advantage of this..

these acts of those contractors will eventually stain this hobby ...

then ppls will be saying that "salt water fish so hard to keep sure die wan..."

Ask your friend to place a bet with the contractor, if the LS can survive for 3 months - he pay double the price of the fish cabinet if the LS dies the cabinet is free

i think this is a good idea too ... why not rite?

can get free tank and cabinet. :eyebrow:
