How to better protect Reefs?

Stop all commercial sea traffic, stop fertilizing the soil within 50km inland, stop all fishing activities, especially the illegal ones, stop all industrial & aviation activities that add carbon & other pollutants into the atmosphere, stop all marine recreation activities like boating, fishing, snorkelling, scuba-diving, beach-combing, reefkeeping, start removing reef-destroying organisms like crown-of-thorns from the reef.... get rid of dangerous gases and stop burning plastics ... we'll bring humanity to its knees but we'll stop the damage to the reefs.

Perhaps in a few hundred years after we stop all the above, the greenhouse effect will reverse itself and the reefs will heal from centuries of damage since the Industrial Revolution.

Mankind is the reason why the Earth is so screwed up. ;)

thank you. anyway, this is an abstract from a paper i'm currently doing.

At the national and local levels, a number of governments and communities have taken steps to protect and restore coral reefs. In general, these examples of good stewardship involve a combination of planning, management, law enforcement, environmental education, and legal protection. Approaches range from building sewage and industrial waste treatment facilities, to regulating access and use of reefs (for example, by establishing community ownership over reef fisheries), to restricting development in sensitive coastal areas. Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef in the world, illustrates the potential of careful reef management. The reef remains in good condition, although sedimentation from runoff is a threat in some localized areas. Careful zoning of the reef -- 20 percent is protected, the rest is managed for multiple use—along with strict enforcement and environmental education has preserved this globally important resource.
