If you can pay a little more, you can get the new Canon Powershot S1 IS, semi SLR, very sharp images and brilliant processor, plus an impressive 10x optical zoom. Only drawback, it's 3.2 megapixels. Got mine at $829 ;)

Hi hamannbmw,

my gf uses a Ixus i. It's 4 mega pixels and it's exactly what you said it is. Small & Sleek. The cam comes with a few rather basic stuff like you can adjust the ISO, Exposure and Color (B&W, Monochrome etc.). There's also a movie mode for you to record short clips with sound that is. The damage is at $545 (quoted frm Hardwarezone). If you're not lookin' for a technical cam but one that is good enough for everyday shooting, Ixus i has my vote.

If you intend to do macro shots, look for one that's able to focus at the shortest distance from the object. I have seen some as close as 3 cm. Also start up time, shuttle lag are important factors, even for newbies for me. My Minolta F100 takes 4 seconds to be ready, almost 1 second lag time between pressing the shuttle button and picture capture, and macro shots only possible from 20cm from the object.......

Its cost me more than 1K last year (with card reader, 256 MB SD card)! :(

My opinion is that Ixus 1 has only digital zoom so zoomed pictures will lose some picture quality. Ixus 500 may be a better bet!

I think canon ixus 500 was quiet a good camera becos:

1) pricing around SGD7xx.00

2) It has a macro distance of 5cm(from the front of the lense)

3) 5 megapixels which will gives u a very defined picture

4) ease of use for beginner

5) full aperture n shuttle speed option

6) selection of sebsitivity ISO50/100/200/400

7) can record movie with sound... :yeah:

overall it should be a very good n sizeable camera......

there's another model from canon - the S50 which is more expensive (i think about $1080) than these n i have yet to read out the reviews......
