Sorry to cut in.

I am going to get a 2 feet sump tank. Standard type on market with 3 compartment.

Would like reefer to advice what type of media to put inside a sump.

Considering what I am going to use.

Main tank 3ft

External Ehiem canister

Weipro skimmer 2012 (from another reefer)

returm pump (yet to decide)

over flow (ask reefer to DIY for me)

DSB in main tank - about 4" (20KG grade0 and 20KG grade1)

is it adviseable to have DSB in sump and wat is the recommended height? 4" or 6"

Many thanks.

not too sure of what do you mean by good sump tank..... however, maybe I could give u some idea what to look into when getting a sump.

The no. of compartment is depend on your need and the size of your sump. If you have a big 4'x2'x2' sump tank... you can afford to have 7~8 compartment if you want to.... however, I dun see the reason to have so many compartment. 5 compartment is more than enough in my opinion.

each compartment is use for different purpose, eg, to place your return pump, protein skimmer, refugium, chemical filtration media like active carbon & etc.

The is no specific size requirement for each compartment. However, for future upgrade, you must ensure that each compartment could cater the needs of future upgrade. eg- the compartment for skimmer should be bigger than you need now as you might upgrade to a bigger skimmer in the future. Same thing applies to your return pump compartment.... some people simply use a tank without any partition / compartment as their sump becaused their sump tank is too small to have any.... it could be done but there is some limitation on this type of design....
