Overflow...

Hmmm... I am thinking whether is there any disadvantages in just having a pipe from the main tank to drain the water into the sump... Like this...

in term of function, it is perfectly all right.

One main reason why there is a glass panel is bec if the pipe breaks, the glass level control the water level in your tank. without the glass, whole tank is drained out. ;)

2nd, in reef tank, you have to be careful not to have any rock lean against the pipe, else u are asking for a flood! ;)

3rd, with sand on the base, the fine sand will eventually wear out the silicon joint for the piping, and create a leaking....also, if there is a leak at the joint, you can't repair it, unless you clear your whole tank.

i was thinking of using this method for my new plan...have to change again...

Wah... So many disadvantages huh.... Maybe should go back to the overflow design...
