Did a calculation on the tank running cost.

1kwh = 18.26cent

Note all currents are apparent current measured with a tong meter so actual consumption should be lower.

Power factor can be anywhere between 0.6 to near 1. For purpose of calculation we take the worst case that is taking apparent power as real power drawn.

One month = 30 days

Running hrs compiled from IKS log.

Chiller power consumption 528watts

main lights off (18hrs/day)

Actual running hrs/day 5.929411765

mains lights on (MH hrs = 6hrs day)

Actual running hrs/day 3.085714286

total hrs/day 9.01512605

total power consumption/day 4.759986555kwh

cost/month $26.07520635

MH

power consumption 907.2watts

Daily running hrs 6

Power consumption 5.4432kwh

running cost/month $29.8178496

CR

power consumption 65watts

Daily running hrs 24

Power consumption 1.56kwh

running cost/month $8.54568

skimmer

power consumption 80watts

Daily running hrs 24

Power consumption 1.92kwh

running cost/month $10.51776

zeovit reactor

power consumption 15watts

Daily running hrs 24

Power consumption 0.36kwh

running cost/month $1.97208

Red dragon

power consumption 144watts

Daily running hrs 24

Power consumption 3.456kwh

running cost/month $18.931968

tunze

power consumption 159watts

Daily running hrs 24

Power consumption 3.816kwh

running cost/month $20.904048

Total $116.7645919

Just top up the coolant in my artica chiller recently.

Before servicing

power consumption 660watts

main lights off (total duration 18hrs)

running hrs 8.411214953

mains lights on (total lights on 6hrs)

running hrs 5.042253521

total hrs running hrs 13.45346847

power consumption 8.879289193kwh

running cost/month $48.6407462

After servicing

Chiller power consumption 528watts

main lights off (18hrs/day)

Actual running hrs/day 5.929411765

mains lights on (MH hrs = 6hrs day)

Actual running hrs/day 3.085714286

total hrs/day 9.01512605

total power consumption/day 4.759986555kwh

cost/month $26.07520635

Difference = 48.6407462 - 26.07520635

= $22.56

Daniel, this is the first top up after 1.5yrs.

Will be doing the top up every 6months from now. $30 is insignificant compared to the amount saved.

Thanks Wei Leong, sounds like mine's due for a top up very soon. It's almost 18 months. I had it serviced/cleaned after a year but no top-up.

You may have mentiond this earlier but is yours a 1/3hp chiller?

Is there any indication of when you'll need a top up?

Longer chilling time?

Daniel, I found that cleaning the radiator and heat exchanger makes little difference to the performance of the chiller. I had been cleaning them once every 6 months right now.

Mine is the artica 1/2hp commerical unit. Another way is to monitor the current drawn on the chiller, lower coolant will results in higher current drawn so I think that is a better indication than running time.

WL, IMHO, dun see why u shld be topping up ur system wif refrigerant every 1/2 yr or so........ unless there is a hairline fracture, sealant leak, etc somewhere in ur system and refrigerant is slowly but surely leaking out. if everything is normal, refrigerant shld not be depleting out of a system at such an alarming rate.

by right, undercharged system will indicate low load/no load on compressor therefore showing little current drawn. overcharged system will indicate high load on comp; showing high current drawn.

the above is made according to my 2 cents knowledge. better double check. :peace:

well I think once a yr will do...

but anyway topping up of gas is cheap.. so he dont mind spending extra to see better result and shorter run time..

Ryan,

The service man tong the chiller before and after top up and I see a drop in the current drawn.

The amount spend on topping up the coolant is insignficant compared to the extended running time so that's why I feel top up every 6 months will help save cost. Maybe like you said 6 months is too frequent so maybe extend to a year.
