What's a good sand sifting addition to the tank?

Hi,

As per above topic, I'm wondering what can i add to my tank to sift sand and also clear up leftover debris. I'm having a 2ft built in IOS tank with abt 4" sandbed. A sea cuke is alil too big cos my tank too small!!!

Sandshifter Gobies or Starfish?

Pistol shrimps. Sri lankan tiger pistols are a good bet. One of the safest pistol shrimp around. Alternatively if you find them too big you could go with alpheus randalli. A colorful pistol shrimp that stays small.

Hermit crabs (blue leg or red leg) would be great. An orange spotted goby would also do the job well. For me, I have both in my 100 gal tank to do the sand sifting and detritus cleanover. Just make sure to have some open shells for the hermits, cause they like to upgrade their houses.

I forgot to add that I have a royal dottyback which is rather territorial and aggressive towards anything that looks remotely like it! Had an algae blenny last time but MIA/KIAed... maybe too stressed by the dottyback.

So I think maybe gobies are out....

As for hermits, will they attack anemones or corals?? Dun have much shells in my tank too as it's so small.

Hmm... think the pistol shrimps may be a good choice. Any idea where can they be found in SG?

I have some, about 6 to 7 "sand" hermit crabs -- they're white legged, never climb onto the live rocks. They're are constantly bringing sand to their mouths, rotating them around when in their mouths, and when in danger they bury themselves under the sand, leaving their eyes and antennas out. about 1 inch long, shell size.

I find the red-legged hermits, too agressive. Recently they murdered 2 of my Astraea snails and assume their shells. They climb all over the place... real nuisance.... glad to have gotton rid of them.

If you want, $1 each. I think I have too many a three footer.

Blue/red legged hermits are reef-safe, shouldn't attack anemones or corals.

madmac, I've never seen my blue/red legged hermits attack my snails. Maybe that's because I provide plenty of shells from various sizes and models for them to choose

From what I heard, red legged hermit is hardier and the less aggressive too.
