Brown diatom algae help!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all

My marine tank has been up running for a month or so now.

However, I have brown diatom algae issue even though I am using RODI water.

Isn't supposed that, there is no silicate and should not have caused the brown diatom algae?

It keeps coming back.

I am doing 25% weekly water change.

Using Royal Nature ION Balanced reef salt.

Specs:

- Temp between 25 to 26

- just using Royal Nature ION Balanced Reef salt with no extra supplements

- kH at about 8

- pH about 8.2

- calcium 400

- magnesium 1320

- RODI water

- 60cm x 45cm x 50cm tank

- livestock: 2 ocellaris clown, 1 yellow tang, 1 purple firefish, 1 white bellied yellow wrasse, 1 pistol shrimp

Equipment

• 60cm x 45cm x 50cm tank

• Chiller at 25 to 26 Celsius

• OASE Biomaster 250

• 75W lighting

• Jebao SOW-5M Wavemaker

• RODI water with 25% weekly water change

• no protein skimmer/ no calcium reactor

Livestock

▪︎2 Ocellaris Clown

▪︎1 White Bellied Yellow Wrasse

▪︎1 Yellow Tang

▪︎2 Green-Blue Chromis

▪︎1 Orange Spotted Goby

▪︎1 Tailspot Blenny

▪︎1 Tiger Pistol Shrimp

RODI u need check TDS, using RODI do not mean zero tds water, probably u need measure.

silicates can also come from ur rock/sand so i dont think u need to be too worried.

Diatom blooms are common for new tanks, especially after end of cycle.

i would probably not be too worried, just give it some time. if problem persist, can get some clean up crew to help.

The tank is not fully mature in just one month time. Running without a skimmer could be the main problem of not able to export out the nutrients in your tank imo.

My tank setting:
Size : 48" x 24" x 24"
Return pump: 1 x Vectra S2, 1 x Eheim 1264
Skimmer: Skimz DC skimmer SV203
Lighting : Maxspect Razor R420R 160W
Chiller : 1hp drop coil compressor
Wave maker : 2 x Nero 5 , 1 x Tunze 6055

Top up : Tunze Osmolator Universal 3155

Any idea how long will diatom go away when the tank is fully cycled?

I currently have one turbo snail only. Read that they do help with diatom too but I guess I am understaffed for the turbo?

One main reason why I am adding only 1 turbo snail is because i want tk avoid them from laying eggs and breed

Cerith snails says to be good for diatoms(i added about 20). If its silicate, search about chemipure blue. I used both and seems to work for me.

sorry bro, cant give u definite answer, as every tank is setup differently, the response is different also, mine took about 2-3 weeks, i didnt siphon sandbed, it naturally go away. So i think u shldnt be too worried ;). Just remember stability is king in reefing. Any changes take it slow.

why u wan to avoid that? if can breed even better, means ur tank is tip top. plus more cleanup crew always helps.

@otaku reefer

Coz too many snails are unsightly. In thinking perhaps to get a snail of each specie so they don't breed. For eg, 1 turbo and 1 nassarius, 1 asrea snail etc. Is this good?

Btw, does snails affect my scoly and brain that is on the sand?
@domvonn

Yes got on last time during cycling
