Theory about Anemone Dying

Hi,

I need some advise here. I have previously reported that my anemone keep dying whereas my other LPS and soft corals are doing ok.

Yesterday, I tested the water parameter and they go like this:

Ammonia = 0mg/l (Sera Test kit)

Nitrite = 0mg/l (Sera Test kit)

Nitrate = 0.2mg/l (Salifert Test kit)

Phosphate = not detectable (Salifert Test kit)

Calcium = 400 mg/l (Salifert Test kit)

KH = 6dkh (Sera Test kit)

salt = 1.024 (with refractometer)

The tank is only 2.5 months old and is still under diatom phase. That explains a little why my nitrate is low. Partly because of the diatom algae and also the macro algae in the refugium.

For the Kh, I think this is a little low. I don't have a CR right now.

With the above parameter, I have a theory about why the Anemone keep dying...may be the reefer here can help correct me.

I suspect that the kh is low, and not enough to buffer the ph. And especially due to the diatom bloom, the ph is swinging up and down day and night. Unfortunately, I'm not able to monitor my ph right now. Because of this, the anemone are not doing well.

Can this be the right theory? But why are my other LPS corals not affected?

Thanks,

Patrick

I would be surprised if Temp effect anemone dying. My tank temp is avg 28.5 (without chiller ) and have 2 BTA ( One is green color and another one is brown color ) and so far they are looking very vyer good (Their tips expend like no one business under 250w MH ). more or less parameters are same as patrick. Both BTA survise in two messive water change ( 2 x 75% ) and hard handling ( I did rescape my tank 3 times in less than 2 months ).

I am just wonder what do you really mean by dying ? Pls correct me if I am wrong

OMG, really sorry to hear that Petrick. Well my clam died 2 weeks back also without any sign. Could be your tank has some crab or somthing like dat given trouble to your BTA ?

My Kh is same as your 6 (Sera Test) and PH is 8.2 (Sera Test) and both are stable. Never encounter PH swing. Eventhough Kh is pretty low. I tried to add Kh Plus but not seem to be working in my tank

My tank is 3 month old only. Only different things I see from ur and mine is my tank is in the both world ( UGF + Sump ).

Lightin looks good. Would suggest u get a ph test pen, monitor...etc to get a couple of proper accurate reading thru out the day. Then u can confirm whether r u havin yoyo pH fluctuation and if yes, u may wanna rectify the problem n bring ur water conditions back to normal before attemptin on another aneomne. ;)

Yeah lor...don't know why also...really unsolved mystery. :(

The best part is most of my anemone died, but only one green bubble tip is growing like mad. get bigger each day.

Can I know what kind of anemone that always died?
