Need help on lighting

Hi Fellow Reefers

I need you expert advise on lighting for keeping SPS. My tank is 2 ft and depth 1.5ft. Currently, using 2 x 55W 12K (one white and one blue). I have 2 colonies of SPS placed appx 0.5 ft from top of the tank. They are doing OK with polyps extending out. However, I would like to provide better lighting for them.

Thinking of changing to T5s. As I understand, for 2 ft tank, T5s are 24W. That is lower, even if I use 2 tubes in terms of Watts, compare to my current lighting. I need to know if using HO type, is it actually brighter or should I stick with my current lighting? Not intending to move to MH yet.

Hi Winz, do try to put aside wattage when it comes to lighting, as it has proven to be a dubious method of measuring lighting needs, across the different lighting methods...

If u can, try to use 3 to 4 24W T5 with good reflectors, they should ensure good coloration (though water quality and circulation are more important IMO) and u can use one or two fans to cool the bulbs for longer life and to lower yr tank temp

As for T5 HO, u have to ask ard here, cause i have no idea if it is stronger in output...

Go for 4 tubes. Will be more than sufficient for most sps.

If your tank is 18 inches wide (front to back), then 6 tubes would be ideal... for coverage and intensity. In addition, as Wedgee put it, good reflectors are equally important.
