MH gives a nice water ripple effect which I feel makes the aquarium look very natural! Only draw back is temperature. wattage wise, lighting a 3ft with 4xT5 is even more power consuming then a single 150W MH

I will also consider that MH is more of a 'spot' lighting, that if your tank is 3ft and more, you may need more than 1 MH bulb to cover the length of your tank. Whereas T5 spreads lighting over the length of it.

Hence a trade of between PAR and coverage, imo.

you can get a decent reflector to spread the light from MH. For 3 ft, one mh should do the job.

no Doubt MH is one of the highest intensive lighting so far in the market, but i think of the electricity running cost is also a major concern... plus MH give off so much heat that you can even cook your egg with it.!!

the MH heated up the water, and you chiller have to run more often to cool down the temp, and this go on and go..

so if there is really a need, i think T5 electricity s good enough.. espceially since the electricity charges just went up again .. sigh.

A good LED bulb and ballast itself is not cheap, which is the main reason why LED lighting is still so expensive after so long even if you try getting those D.I.Y unit.. maybe with the increase of the numbers of reefer changing into LED lighting, prices will then start to fall..

it is just like T5 lighting use to cost alot when it just started, but slowly when more and more people started using it price begin to falll and it is more affordable now.

Go for LED but make sure you get the right one.

Any one who tell you LED is cheap is definitely not selling you the right thing.

It is definitely not cheap to invest but with your running cost down by about 40%

and no parts changes for the next 50,000 hours you will benefit from the investment soon
