HI guys..would like to need your advise regarding the above mentioned. I m thinking of converting to a reef tank from my currently 4ft fowlre set up. The dsb in my main tank is about 4 -5 inch now. Since I m planning to do a complete rescale of my lr to faciliate the placement of corals, is it ok that i add in another 3 inch height of sand to make it an ideal height for dsb. My tanks has been running for 3 mths though the most of the stuffs has been taken over from a existing 1 yrs plus systems...THansk for all advise ;)

Bro,

a DSB can be a minimum of about 6"... even if you wanna have a 8" DSB in the main tank, I would suggest that you add slowly the sand like maybe 0.5" every 3-4 days.... dat allows the bacterial to have time to grow on the new sand... :)

Juz my 2 cts...

bro rav-65

my initial plan was to take out all my lr..and then add the sand..b4 rescaling, which i estimate will take me half a day... i still have about 6 fishes...somes shrimps, snails, crab cuke inside the tanks. I do not have enough equipments to house the fishes and LR for a few days....do u think i can proceed w my original plan..?

thanks

urh...logically, yes your liverock will have a bit more depth in the sandbed, due to the increased height of the sandbed itself.

I doubt there is anything detrimental in that. then again, I wouldn't be the best source of information when it comes to this.

sorry, can't help you. (=

As far as I know, it is better as the LR has a better footing, if you go diving, the rocks are partially buried as well, so it's just natural.

Hi Evan bro,

its more advisable if you add the sand slowly, if you cover the entire sandbed with new sand, there may not be sufficient bacterial to maintain your bioload.... if you take out all your rocks, you may disturb all the deritus and particles dat might take up to one day to settle.... and meanwhile, u may have to house your fishes in a big tub....

But watever u do, dun ever disturb your existing sandbed too much... :)
