tk has been in the 4th mth running. nitrate level keep rising ever since i added a sunburst anthias. could b due 2 the feedings as advised earlier on. algae starting 2 form on sand bed.

sump consists of filter wool, coral chips, refugium with DSB n macro algae. seachem phosphate n silicate remover in sump.

tk size: 4x2x2.5

sump: 2.5x1.5x1.5

calcium-450mg/l

kh-10dkh

ph-8

ammonia-0

nitrite-0

nitrate->40mg/l

anyway, attached r the pics of the coral chips. notice the brown stuff on it?

could tis b the reason 4 nitrate build up??

thanks to all..

Probably would be one of the contributing factors.... take them out.. that's what I did... (although my nitrate levels didn't really take a dip after... hm)

If you take them out, tanke it slowly, a little at a time over perhaps a couple of weeks.

If you have lots of wet/dry media that will hold more aerobic bacteria than anaerobic ones (that reduce no3 to nitrogen gas), you will your system able to deal with ammonia and nitrite quickly... but the end result is your nitrate will build up quickly in due time.

If you have no way to deal with nitrates naturally....eg. with a DSB or ample LR... you have to reduce feeding, maintain better water quality with a good skimmer or water changes or maybe resort to AZ-NO3 or operating a denitrator...
