Recommend me a dive school

i couldnt agree more.. ppl then to look at price first.. then decide on safety. however, like what sohpg had mentioned, it is at your own risk should u take up diving even though the instructors are there to guide u. U must know your own comfort level.

yes, i'm surprised that u got yourself a SMB.. but come and think of it, it is one of the safety gadgets that u should have as a diver.

For me, i launch it using the line. But i replaced the line given with one that is abt 6M long and 4mm in thickness and yellow in color so that i can see it better underwater.. hehehe.

As for fins, try out a couple first before u get one pair on your own. But i do recommend getting a pair of wetsuit if u can.. but then, it still boils down to own comfort level.

Hehe, my "recommendation" has gotta be Blue Reef They're just a nice bunch of people who're passionate about diving and who're caring at the same time! Hmmm, i just took my OWD with them lah...so maybe I'm practising favouritism....but I did do my research before deciding on them....post-trip comments: Thumbs-up

well said. But i can say usually ppl looked at the $$ b4 anything else.

BTW i heard that there is going to be a fairprice thingy to prevent undercutting from each DS

SO PPL if u want to take ur OW now take it fast or else the price is going up(And i really mean UP)

Im suprised u bought a sausage as a basic gear as ppl usually get their fins 1st rather than a SMB.

So i like to ask how u launch it?? using a spool or reel or just using the line given???

Err... figured that if I suay suay got seperated, I could use the sausage to surface rather than going up and wait blindly. Luckily I have no need to put the sausage in use so far, but I observed my Instructors using the Octopus to inflate it then let it shoot up to the surface. I have not change the line though, didn't know that I'm supposed to change it for better. Any suggestion?

Wow, you're going with them ah, sooooo niceee!

I'm not lah...'cos i couldn't finish my OWD due to painful ears after the 2nd dive (- didn't equalise properly i guess), and me taking longer to get used to it all....BUT was great fun with them - i had one-to-one attention from my instructor too =) ...'cos that's how much they really cared =) I must have driven them all nuts though, haha...but they never gave up on me, wow...

Hope to be able to go with them again to continue my OWD (soon) or even if it's just for snorkelling!

hmmm.. wat a coincidence... me dive with them too.. might be doing my rescue this aug... i know what u mean abt them.. anyway... we divers tends to promote the DS that we go to.. so, we are bias in a way.. hahaha..

no worries.. take your time to learn OW... it is better to be safe than sorry..

did i see that u mentioned that u use the sausage to surface.. i hope u mean u inflate it to show boats that there is a diver below... and not help u to surface.. that is a scary tot if u did not highlight properly... can lead to bendz...

Alternatively, Once on the surface, inflate it with either your primary reg or octo and hold on to it...to indicate to the boat that u are there.

Btw, did u put a weight at the end of the line? if not, the line will not be taut.. of course, i'm not talking abt putting a diving weights.. merely a carabina will do the trick.

changing the line is optional but usually, the line given is not long enuff. Also, it is very thin... i once have the line at 10m... but cut it short already coz after deploying, i have a hell of a time coiling them back. (coz me not using a reel)

oh no! of course not holding the sausage to ascend! Wot I meant was that I will deploy the Sausage up to the surface first to warn boats that there are divers coming up. Apologise for the confusion. And once on surface, will definately wave to any boats that pass us by using the sausage to catch their attention. Am I right so far???

my suggestion will put a fishing weight at the end of the line.

when u deploy, make sure the current is away from u. take the sausage out let the line down using ur octo pump a bit of air into the opening of the sausage. make sure u dont hold onto the line let it go and see it fly to the surface.

Im suprised u get the smb cos if u dont knw how to deploy it underwater, it will become a dangerous equipment underwater.

errr... u should not wave.. it might be mistaken for a signal for distress... u can also blow the whistle..if u have one..

as for the line, something along 3-4mm will be sufficient. Usually, there is not carabina attached to it... btw, the carabina that i'm talking abt aint those cheapo $1 type. i'm talking abt those medium size Stainless steel type ard 10cm from end to end.

alternatively, u can use a fishing weight like what hammerhd had suggested.
