sps rtd unexpectedly

hi experts,

kind to share some experiences with me regarding rtd of sps corals esp. acroporidae sp.

how and why they rtd all of a sudden? assuming all parameters are right and acceptable.

do i look out for

1) slugs? how do they look?

2) whatever?

frm my observations, acros are quite sensitive to sg, light adaptation (thus not wise to shift around in the tank). Temp not so. but i may be wrong. of course, it depends on the species too. Fragging on dying acros does not ensure any survivability too.

and i found out that epoxies are also quite unsuitable too. i used 2 little fishes and koralin epoxy. Can't really remember the brands. ANy recommendations on other alternatives.

i am not looking for definite answers but just some experiences u have.

currently feeding coral plankton and also DT for my clams. Do i need other foods?

Can you pls explain why epoxy are not suitable?

I've frags stick with epoxy but they have encrust over the expoy already so far. No problem found. In fact it's the super glue gel that I found a bit weak as the snails and other LS can easily topple them.

rtd stands for rapid tissue degeneration and it is different from rapid tissue necrosis. necrosis takes place in minutes. rtd is like what u call a whiteband disease where the polyps are healthy and roll up like a ball, then detaches as the degeneration progresses. it happens over a spread of days. However, it cannot be termed white band disease becos there is no absolute evidence of pathogenic influences.

"return to dust" is too scientific for experts.

bro weileong, could u recommend me the brand of epoxy so i can experiment w it. thks. maybe some pointers on your gluing techniques.

Some of my acro frags got this tip turning to ash like within a few days time, I do not know if its a RTD problem. But I found out the culprit is my powerhead where the flow is aiming directly on the tip of the acro frags.........shift the ph angle and the RTD stops and the tips recovers slowly after 2-3 weeks........however two birdnest frags did not survive cos the min the polyps show signs of witting off, my camelback shrimp started nipping on it.

Damn......wanted to trap that camelback, but it was too smart.....hope my red grouper will finish it off when it gets bigger.

Lugols solution is juz another brand names like Iodine, Iodine Mild...etc tat contains iodine, potassium iodide. So watch the dosage if u gonna use it.

the wait is painful becos u dare not buy more corals fearing its attack.

i had to tear down my tank to catch the camelback and i did it with the coral hogfish. the coralhogfish bit of its head first and murmured "crunchy" while i watched sadistically with pleasure. reason is becos i hated the fella as i killed my entire colony of acropora.

powerhead shud never be directed at any corals. SPS or LPS. direct flow is never gd.

i am using Tropic MArin brand costs $20 and it is a gd brand. In fact all my additives are tropic marine. and test kits salifert. for kalk, using seachem now.
