how much weight can 6mm glass hold ?

Need your valuable input or experience.

Currently I have 10kg of liverock in my 2ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft tank.

Glass thickness is 6mm.

Thot of adding another 10kg of liverock gradually.

Anyone knows how much weight can a 6mm glass hold ?

Hard to say without knowing how is the base supported, how level your stand is, what kind of bracing do you have, what kind of silicone is being used etc.

It comes with cabinet.

I bought it from Nature Aquarium.

I've attached a pic of their bigger tank (3ft or 4ft)

Mine is the 2ft version. Cabinet comstruction is the same.

Sorry I do not know much about silicon and bracing.

But I guessed its the very normal type, nothing fanciful.

Probably more towards planted tank as that's a planted tank shop.

Silicon is black in color if that helps.

Hi Ong,

IMO, I think there shouldn't be any problem. Just be careful when you lay the LRs, avoid dropping or any hard impact on the glass. Most breakage are caused by accident.

my advise is better be safe than sorry...it is no joke having the floor wif saltwater

once my 2ft 6mm DIY sump tank leak...resulting in the floor wet wif saltwater...kena scolding by my wife

I'm also quite worried if the bottom would give way or not.

Before that, was even thinking of have 5 to 6" of DSB.

After calculating, that would be around 50 to 60kg of sand.

Plus the addition 10kg of rock....think better not.

Don't play play, better seek opinion here...

To all those using 6mm glass. Any of you have more than 20kg of liverock ?

For a 2x1x1 tank, 6mm seems good enough for any amount of sand or LR. People with 4x2x2, which is 8 times in terms of volume are only using 10mm glass and it could hold lots of LR and DBS too. Just my opinion.

Was having almost 20 kg of LR in my 6mm 2 X 1 X 1 tank. No problems... but no DSB

I have since upgraded to 8mm 2.5 footer and using the 6mm 2 X 1 X 1 for sum and refugium with DSB and some LR with macro algae.

The cabinet should be sturdy enough... but you gotta make sure you try to even out the distribution of weight from the LRs on the base.

i have a 2 x 1 x 1 wiff ard 8 kg of live rocks.

and that amt of live rocks is enough to 'fill' up the tank...

how do u use 20kg in a 2 feet ?
