Pronunciation: NEPH-thee-eh-GORG-ee-uh

Common Name: Chilli Sponge, Red Finger (Soft) Coral, Devil's Hand

Region: Indo-Pacific reef slopes with strong currents. Also lagoon areas with strong tidal currents in shade attached to hard substrate.

Description: Tough thick tissue with some prominent sclerites. Small colony size, normally not much more than 6 in (15 cm) tall, with finger-like lobes or branches. There may be other species with taller colonies and finer branches. Color is red, orange or purple.

Where did you get it from? Wanted to buy from Henry some weeks ago, he had one piece left, but passed since I didn't know what in the world it was. Does it need feeding, or is it photosynthetic?

I find that chili corals do better under shade as nuisance algae tend to grow on them when they are placed in the open.

They are non-photosynthetic.

They feed on phyto and zooplankton apparently and will shrink quickly if not provided this.
