Pronunciation: NEPH-thee-eh-GORG-ee-uh

Common Name: Chilli Sponge, Red Finger (Soft) Coral, Devil's Hand

Region: Indo-Pacific reef slopes with strong currents. Also lagoon areas with strong tidal currents in shade attached to hard substrate.

Description: Tough thick tissue with some prominent sclerites. Small colony size, normally not much more than 6 in (15 cm) tall, with finger-like lobes or branches. There may be other species with taller colonies and finer branches. Color is red, orange or purple.

I find that chili corals do better under shade as nuisance algae tend to grow on them when they are placed in the open.

They are non-photosynthetic.

They feed on phyto and zooplankton apparently and will shrink quickly if not provided this.
