Leave the sand alone and you will be save at least for the moment. If you want to cover that may be you can get those Oyama tape to cover the sand part.

HS will bind with O2 and your livestocks will be in the danger of suffocation.

Cause:

Anaerobic decomposition. which means you do not have enough oxygen to perform denitrification. HS is not a product of proper denitirification.

Probable solution:

1. You might not have enough flow in your system, try to target about 20-30 times your tank volume per hour, have a considerable amount that sweep across your sand bed but not till it digging your sand bed.

2. Get some quality livesand or live rocks to increase the fauna population in your sand bed.

If there is black stuff in the sand itself, it is probably anerobic bacteria at work, but if it is on the glass only, it could just be algae.
