Bioballs vs Coral Chips

Can anyone tell me if there is any difference using bioballs or coral chips in the sump?

Presently using bioballs and thinking of switching to coral chips instead.

If I m not wrong, they belong to the same cat.-Does not help in nitrate reduction.

In my trickle filter, I have both bio-balls and coral chips. The bb are above the water line and exposed to air while the cc is below the water line totally submerged.

I am using coral chips, removed my bioballs cos I read somewhere that they are a nitrate or nitrite manufacturer.... Correct me if I am wrong.

Yah, am worried that bioballs are nitrite/nitrate factories. Thats why thinking of replacing them with coral chips.

Can the experts comment?

You'll need a anoxic DSB of crushed coral for denitrification. If the CC is used to replace bioball in a trickle filter, it's still an aerobic area and will still be a nitrate factory.

i uses both BB & CC...but nitrate less than 10ppm

IMO, it all depends on individual tank

mrjoe...u may choose to wash your CC but NEVER NEVER wash ALL your CC becos by doing this, u are washing away/killing all your beneficial bacteria
