hi...

i have seen some of the AT post of DIY lights went wrong.

and also with the recent case of fire breakout due to aquarium equipment.

i am very concern about the safety of the marine setup. those lighting esp..

how to be on the SAFE side....

buy a expensive lightings... or DIY?

I did my own DIY lightings and pipings for my 20 discus tank.

But the environment changes.. new house... and using hotter lights..

any advise

Lights are pretty safe if you ask me... FL, PL, T5 esp.. only MH perhaps a bit more risky..

anyways, those fires were more likely caused my lousy pumps and overloaded sockets than lights which catch fire.. (doubt this will ever happen!)

I always make it a point to ground all electrical equipment, and that includes any DIY FL or PL lights that usually run on only a live and neutral wire. A titanium grounding probe in the tank will be good too - saved my @rse once! B)

As for fires, like what ervine said - don't overload, make sure you keep sockets away from possible water splash and hook it up to a surge protector and circuit breaker.

yar....i agree with DragonGoby But where can i get a circuit breaker... It helps save my friend life once.... so i am taking the precaution too...and dont forget salt is a good conductor of electricity.. <_< so...standby is the best... :)

i dun think buying "ready to use" lighting from LFS is safe.... there was more that 2 of my lightset having electric leakage due to water splash..... as for DIY, u could make more safety prcaution such as grounding of equipment & splash proofing.. not only that, you are paying for something that you want required and built according to your preference.

however, grounding the equipment only means protecting your life, house and equipment.... when there was a electric leakage, the MCB will trip and all your equipment will stop functioning... you tank will gone in a few hours time if you are not at home.... However, compare to yours and your family safety, guess a tank would be nothing....

yes...what u say is true... a tank is nothing as compare to my family and my pet dog.

well....need to be careful..

i plan to built a tank inside a wall...conceal by custom make cabinets but with lourve...for air ventilation...

however i can buy ready make ligths and keep them high up..on the ceiling.. so it wont be splash.

as for grounding...maybe can make modifications..
