strange experience with my algae blenny

Recommended Posts

hi all,

i encountered a strange happening on friday. here goes,

i hv 2 algae blennies (both abt 2.5" long), 1 in my main tank and the other in my refugium. On thursday nite, while taking a peek in my refugium, i discovered the algae blenny in my refugium missing. i took out all the macroalgae and LRs in my refugium but could not manage to find that bugger. i assume it was dead.......

the next day after i returned from work, i took a look in my main tank and presto!!!! i found 2 algae blennies in my main tank!!!! how is that possible?? i'm using a sicce idra as a return pump from my refugium to main tank. the sicce idra in my refugium is operated at max capacity with a 16mm hole attachment to maximise flowrate. i mean even if the algae blenny was sucked into the return pump, wun it oredi hv become minced meat???

i'm baffled by the whole encounter....

think anyone can provide me with reasonable answers???

perhaps someone in your home played a prank on you? Or when u liefted out all the stuffs from refugium, u placed into the main tank? It might have hidden in the LR and then when its in the maintank, without u noticed, it went off to another LR.

Maybe your algae blenny watch Star Trek and learnt how to beam itself up to the tank???? :P:P

Joking ah bro.

Seriously there is no way the blenny can survive thru your pump. Why???? Because I has an incident on Sat. My fire goby died and fell into the overflow. it went down into my sump when I mistakenly lifted the strainer from my overflow pipe. My MD55 which is running my skimmer suck the bugger in and the goby got jammed in the pump. So there no way a live algae blenny can survive that. Furthermore I'm sure your pump has some sort of a sponge filter to prevent debris entering right?? So you must have did something to tranfer it to your main tank.

Or is it......no it's not 7th month yet

i hv told all of u all bros,

my parents dun touch my tank....... no one does except me......

and no, my return pump does not hv a sponge filter. it juz has a 16mm hole to suck water up to the main.

It happen to me twice except that my is a IOS with 3mm spacing. I dunno how but my bi-color after being terrorize by my lawnmower went into the IOS. I could not remove it as when I approaches the IOS the blenny will disapear deeper into the chambers.

So no choice but to leave it there. After two weeks, it emerges and weaken by the lack of food it lie there on my pre-filter wool. I just gently net it and releases it back into the main tank. I have since remove the lawnmower.

Anyway, I guess, "live has its way" quoted from Jurassic Park. ;)

I think your LMB learn from Nemo. It used a stone to jam the rotor blade and squeeze thru th pipe to go into the main tank.... ??

 that's a good one RockyBoy......

guess no one knows except for the LMB himself....... :P

It could have went back up the overflow against the current like a salmon? Not sure for blennies, but gobies have pelvic fins that can form some sort of suction with surfaces. Maybe your blenny did just that?

Did u turn off the pump when you remove the live rocks in your refugium to check if it was dead?

Algae blenny can really swim fast and I suspect it squeezed through the turned-off pump, then shot itself right up the return pipe into the main tank while you are searching for him :o

Is this possible?

could have swam up the pipe into the Ibox...and maybe "jumped" as it was getting agitated? have you seen how high and far fishes can jump? quite possible, judging by the location of your Ibox.

either that, or it was a freaky incident. I'll go for the latter.
