What are some hardy clams?

Hi,

I know that Clams require at least T5s or MH lighting but I just want to know if this is possible.

I have a 10 gallon tank and I just got a 96W power compact light which is 50/50. Are there some hardy clams which do not require such intense lighting that can be kept healthy under such lighting?

Maxima is the best choice for you the following are my reasons:

1) Does not require as much light as Crocea

2) Slow growth, will not outgrow your tank so soon unlike Derasa

3) Generally more hardy compared with Corea maybe because of reason 1

But still try to place the clam as high as you can.

My 2 cents,

Can anyone confirm this statement. I thought it's the other way?

IMO. 250W MH for Max and 150W MH for Crocea.

Tank 4x2x2.5

under power compacts.....your best bet for hardy clams will be squamosas/derasas...

they do not need as much light as crocea/maxima but they will grow larger

I kept 3 corcea clams under my 4x36W 8000K PL + 2x36W Blue PL curently, so far so good. In fact, 1 of my purple corcea have been with me for 1.5 yr. It was kept under 2 x 36W 10000K PL previously. My Clams are always placed on the top of the landscape. Ard 2" from the water surface to ensure they enjoy the most light.

yeah...tat's why you placed them 2inch under the water like you said....

definitely u can keep them alive this way...and reasonably happy

but nothing beats providing a MH for them, you can keep them even on the sandbed if you want if your tank is not too deep...

i also kept clams with PLs when i started or even tried 3x54W T5 lights with them within inches of the water surface also...

but nothing beats the point source of light like a MH, the clams will love the intensity from a point source more...

but if you say that PLs also can keep watever kind of clams, yes, i agree, been there, done that ;)

But will it harms the clam if they are exposed to too much lights? I have switch from T5 to PL and have move them to 2 inch from the lights (my PL is nearly touching the water....) They seems quite happy and has attached themselve quite tightly to my LR, one of them seems to change from brown to blue!....unfortunately, the LR is my main peice....

Now my worry is, if I switch to MH, they will be under too much light!!!

tineng > I would advice you not to put your lite almost touching the water... that's dangerous... once short cct your lite, all LS and equipments might be doomed or damaged :o

Nah crocea are rock boring clam and the area they live in is very shallow thus it is natuiral that they require more light than maxima.......... But one word of advice some maxima especially ultras ones require very strong light of ard 400watts.......... Also when buying corceas, choose those that have a piece of rock attach to it, as those without may have byssal damage when collection....... BTW all clams are not easy thing to keep and if you do want to have them, read up on them first.................

Thanks Dispar, you have definitely cleared my doubts regarding Croceas & Maximas.

Actually your point on making sure the clams attaches to rocks during purchase is very true. I have a friend who bought against my advise on this and end up losing three clams after 1 week.
