Where to start

Recommended Posts

Hi reef club members,

i am considering to engage with the hobby after having kept planted tanks for a few years. What is a good shop in Singapore where to buy tank and set-up, where to get newbie advise and help etc. I would like to keep coral and a few fish - thinking of 4ft tank after a little bit of research. Thankful for any comments, suggestions, tip etc

cheers

H

If u going for rimless u can consider red sea tank.

Else aquarium artist and deaquatic offer very competitive price for their fish tank set.

Heard gd review on CRA also but price is not the cheapest.

If time allows go talk to 3 - 4 tank maker b4 u make ur decision.

Thank you very much Alex, Kwancy, Melvyn, Solo, and Indeco. Guess I will be touring Singapore’s marine shops soon. Does anyone have experience with Specialised Aquatics Solutions?  They are the retail outlet of reef systems?

One more question please - there are thousands of YouTube channels out there, which one (or two) do you experiences reefers recommend for a newbie?

Thank you very much for all your help

I have good experiences with SAS, though I must say their prices may be on the higher end. They are quite open to non-obligations chats. No harm paying them a visit.

You can always support our very own local ones :)

Dreaming Reef is one, SG bearded aquarist, who is covering fresh water, has recently covered a few on marine! Do catch the one he did with Leon, one of our gurus here!

What ever it is. Please survey and ask around. I have known many impulse reefer paid a very high than usual price. And please do some research before setting up or seek a mentoring buddy. Like said, BRS TV 52week on youtube helps alot to understand how reef tank works. Happy reefing!

As far as tanks go, consult guys who have experience with marine systems- especially since saltwater is much more corrosive and denser so things like a suitable tank stand and glass thickness are even more important. Overall I’d say Iwarna is the most reliable lfs that specialises mostly in saltwater livestock and upkeep. They also sell secondhand refurbished tanks there and lots of scape options, though they don’t usually have much stock of equipment. Ah beng aquarium and coral farm have the widest variety and volume of fish at very affordable prices, but that also comes with its own drawbacks- higher chance of parasites and fish potentially caught by cyanide. For equipment you should try places like Aquamarin Aquatic Pets, Deaquatic and FreshNMarine. SAS is TOP quality but it’s the most premium and therefore the most expensive. Be prepared to fork out $$ for stuff that may be much cheaper in the modest stores. If you’re into very premium corals, Reefing reality is the place to go, though I would recommend against it if you’re a beginner. Pinnacle Aquatics and MAdpetz are small but great if you’re looking for basic reefing necessities.

All things considered, remember to take it slow and enjoy the hobby while you’re exploring new ways to improve.

All the best! Hope this helps

Cheers
