coral sand size recommendation

A few things to consider

SPS need high flow, sand cannot too fine

Fish that burrow, sand cannot be too rough

Maintainence, rough sand tend to trap more detritus in between

If u dont mind the bottomless look, i will recommend it as it will make ur life so much easy.

for me, i use caribsea bahamas oohlite as bottom sand den use special grade sand cover on top, oohlite sand is fine sand so will be better for denitrifying, the coarser sand is cover on top to reduce sand storm from high flow. as for sandbed maintenance, i use a lot of CUC like narsarius snail, conch cerith to turn sandbed plus eat fish poop. my 2 cents.
