Battling deadly Bryopsis algae

Recommended Posts

Starting this thread to share some of my personal experience battling this nuisance algae which has been troubling my tank for almost 6 month..

my existing tank is more than 5 year now and It seem at some point it is true that for a very mature tank , all sort of problem might come especially algae..

in fact i have tried almost all the products out there , and sadly to say none really work. Some product manage to control it, but after awhile of cleaning and detoxify it with Hydrogne perxiode it seem to keep coming back again .

i was actually  very worried about using medicine esp antibotic threatment on my tank  how it will affect my beloved fish and corals. However, after              doing my own research online, all the positive out come encourage me to try so..

This is a very detail explanation of the Fluconazole treatment from other forum here ( https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/bryopsis-cure-my-battle-with-bryopsis-using-fluconazole.285096/) which inspire me to try the treatment.

This is some photo of how bad the outbreak is before the treatment.

During treatment, i remove the skimmer cup and let it run to provide additional oxygen in the tank ..

Below is some photo of the same spot after 3rd day of treatment.. can see that the algae is started to weaken

After about 1 week after the treatment , all the bryopsis algae is gone and i am happy to share that it is a reef safe treatment and with no fish casualty loss

however, i loss some SPS which i suspect could be due to the drop in water quality after the treatment.

I faced the same problem too. I used fluxRX, which is basically  Fluconazole as well. Heres some before and after pic. Took about a week to see them disappear.

As mentioned, its reef safe. Didn't suffer any casualties.

Thanks for sharing. Wonder what can be done to minimize collateral damage to corals.

U can buy the fluxRx at some LFS... Think fresh n marine, iwarna, etc. Alternatively, some pharmacy store overseas. Locally think need prescription. Do chk out the law before buying from oversea.

Run longer to ensure totally eliminated. Know someone thought everything gone and issue came back weeks later, and he has to restart the treatment again.

Thank you so much for this post.  I have been battling Bryopsis for months too.  So just follow the instruction on the bottle?  Or must "tweak" it a bit?  Need stop Skimmer and Algae Scrubber?

Usually a single treatment would do the trick

Bought FluRX few weeks ago, but haven’t started treatment.
Just want to clarify, this is a Single Dosage treatment, and not Daily Dose, correct?
