The T5 for the same wattage are able to give a much brighter light compared to the PL same wattage.

So its possible that 30w T5s can possibly beat 50w PL and last a lot longer than the PLs too as PLs are notoriously hot and will degrade in output quickly in a very short time.

I used to have a pendant that had 9 x 36w PLs and the heat was so tremendous that it can crack a 5mm thick glass sheet cover under it.

The heat from MH bulb cannot be compared to any other light source except the sun! LOL!!

I haven't found a 400w T5 yet... I don't think its possible! ;)

If you mean 36w x 11 T5... it will be cooler than a 400w MH.

But the light intensity of a 400w MH will blow the socks off 36w x 11 T5.. barely... hahaha... with very good reflectors I guess.. ;)

Watt for watt, T5 will smash MH in light output. Packing 11 tubes into a small space won't be very cool even compared with an MH bulb.

Yeah agreed but you have to emphasize its only on a watt for watt basis. :D

There is also depth penetration to consider besides other factors eg. cost, space, replacement rate, colour temp, personal preferences in visual aspects etc in selecting MH lighting vs T5 fixtures for the coral tank.

Anyway... the original question is about heat... hope that has been addressed! :)

If heat is just your main concern... then possibly the T5s are cooler comparatively. But then again, it may not.

Depends on your hood setup, ventilation and wattage of your T5 tubes.

pretty solid info.......

even the BOSS answered......

Think i would get T5s eventually......

I switch to PL because a 55w PL is still shorted then a 24w T5....

the PL-T4 tube also means that i can put almost as much tubes as T5...so able to get very bright lights into my 2 footer, but then cannot use fan, have to use chiller....

now thinking of using MH.... :D

but i have tried a 36 watt Pl and a 30 watt T5..but seems that the Pl is much more brighter .. ??why is this so ?? But Pl is a bit yellowish.. :(

must agreed with you that the 36wPL seems brighter then a 30w T5.....but i suspect its because 36w PL has higher penatration.

can any bro confirm this?
