sump design

Decided to redesign my sump so can make all pumps external as well as kill all the nasty bubbles.

Need some comments.

I think not too practical to built, gotta be $$$ due to so many baffles.

skimmer is external to sump.

Water flows back from overflow box. Goes thru 2 baffle to kill the bubbles and to lower the height with the 2 sets of baffles.

The water flows over to the 2xMD55 which goes to my skimmer.

Skimmer returns to the small compartment and then flows to the return pump compartment via one baffle to kill any bubbles.

Any excess flow from the return pump compartment will overflow back to the main compartment.

Any suggestion from the experts?

Changed the design to this.

Water from overflow pipe comes into first chamber, goes thru one set of baffle then flows to the MD55 compartment where water is pumped to the skimmer.

Skimmer return to skimmer return comparment and goes thru 2 sets of baffles to kill any bubbles before reaching the return pump compartment

if MD55 compartment overflow then water will overflow to skimmer return compartment then back to the return pump compartment

return pump compartment water level will be taken care by TUBBY so should not run dry.

Maybe tank maker see already will faint.

You are not interested to have any kind of other filtration on it?

I'm planning to make one too sometime soon. Three compartments: One light mechanical filtration (where I can easily change the sponge), One middle DSB (largest compartment) and the third would hace the return pump and the skimmer pump.

so it doesn't get sucked up by the return pump and then back to your tank.

No chemical compartment, no refugium ?

My latest sump got a 5"x5"x17" corner mixer compartment for additive mixing and auto topup purposes. Activated using a small level switch from the return compartment to start the mini powerhead inside the mixer compartment for stirring or topup.

Will update when its ready.

i m no guru in sump design........ but why not go to CF to hv a look at the sump design, which houses virtually everything??? it is black in color and is on the side of the display tanks. think it is being custom made for someone, looks good. u can copy the design from there.

juz me 2 cents suggestion. :P

updated design.

I guess almost done finalise now.

Combined the advantage of my first design and the 2nd one w/o the complication of the first design (tank maker might pengz when he sees the first drawing).

In this design water from the skimmer return (skimmed water) will not mixed with the water from overflow (preskimmed water) unless the preskimmed water is higher flow what the skimmer pump flow rate.

Any problem you can see from this design?

Can the skimmer output flowrate catch up with the return pump flow? If can't ur return compartment might dry up real fast.

If can, it will be the best cos all your overflow water is being skimmed before returning back to main tank.

Actually this is my finalise design, submitted to tank maker already.

skimmer pump at 1st compartment from right.

overflow from tank at 2nd compartment.

skimmer return at 3rd comparment.

return pump at last compartment. Water level is reduced to 5" at last compartment.

Water level for the 1st 3 compartment will raise to the level of the partition on the left of 3rd compartment so will help to kill any bubbles.

In this design the last compartment will not run dry.

skimmed water flows to last compartment.

No compartment will run dry as it does not matter if return pump or skimmer pump has higher flow rate as the flow into the last compartment will depends on the return pump flow rate.

Looks like a very sound design! :)

Kudos to this 'Snr Reefer'. ;) Who izzit?

What kind of return pump are you using... you may still get some microbubbles if the returns are very strong and there are not enough baffles/too low a baffle height.

Reminds me that I have been sitting on my own new sump project for too long... need it done in time for my dual beckett... probably a 1048 or 848 at the least. ;)

I scared I mentioned his name and pple will go flood his PM box :P

This senior reefer is the same person that taught me the dried norti on LR trick :P

Some hints. He's got IKS, red dragon, 6ft SPS reef, AT from reborn. Should be enough hints, okie let's not exposed his identify else I can't get tips from him already.

For return pump. I intend to have about a flow of 6000 l/h which I hope will not be too strong.

Shall I add in one more baffle for safety?

Orh... so this humble 'Snr Reefer' stay in Punggol right, one who almost never change water right..

I salute him too.. got many good advise from him.

I scared I tell his nick then you all go bomb his PM box. Let him reveal himself if he wants to.

3 cheers to him, too many good advise from him. Anyway he saved me from buying the red dragon, lol else another $1.5K gone.

Seems like all of you know who he is already, too obvious hints already, who else have IKS + red dragon and 6ft + change water once a yr + 9 months long AT from reborn lol.

Errmm... AT, what do you meant by "a 1048 or 848 at the least." is this referring to the dimension of the sump?
