Ever since I started my pico and then change to nano tank, many years ago, I have been using the normal ceramic/bio rings in my tank, those old un-branded type.

Now want to switch them with either Maxspect or Marinepure balls.

Would like a gauge from this portal, which is the more popular type to use.

All feedback, suggestions, recommendation are most welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

I’m currently using marinepure in conjunction with siporax

Marinepure

Pros:

1. Very porous

Cons

1. Crumbles easily

2. May clog

Siporax

Pros

1. V porous

2. Wouldn’t clog at all (if placed correctly) due to the cylinderical design

 Cons:

1. Relatively more expensive

More info on siporax:

Hope that helps

Siporax best bio media hands down if you don't mind spending more. Maxspect bio balls is also a good choice

Sera Siporax Algovec Professional or Sera Siporax Bia Active Professional?

How frequently or do they need to be washed every now and then?

Bio Active. Don't need to wash but you may want to take a bucket of tank water, but the media in to shake off the detritus every now and then. But this can only be done if it is in a media bag.

To add on to Reefer_peter, I place my siporax in an egg crate so that I can shake it to remove build ups:

But I’ve had it for more than 1 year in my sump already and so far i’ve never need to shake it

Happy to tell you, just go downgrade to Coral chips at $10 per bag for 10kg. Works well for my fabulous fishes. Only issue is to top it up yearly as they may disintegrate.

Hi, I would recommend the hollow cylindrically shaped ones: priced at $30.40/$15.90 in your picture

It’s less likely to clog
