Taking water from your tank

Recommended Posts

As you know, there are lots of scenarios when you are required to take some water out of your tank:

  • Acclimating fish/corals
  • Coral dipping and rinsing
  • water chemistry testing

My question is - these activities cause the overall water level to dip, thus requiring our Auto Top Off to kick in - which, in turn, results in lowering the salinity.

Is this not a problem?

To me, this seems like an obvious issue, but no one seem to be talking about it. Am I worrying for nothing?

I believe the amount you’re taking out should not be huge enough to make an impact on the salinity. Unless your total water volume is so small..

Measure salinity before and after taking to see how much or is there even a drop?

Depends. If you are having a 5l tank and take out 1l, yeah, replace it.
If the other guy is having a 1,000l tank, and takes out 2l, it doesn’t even affect if he doesn’t replace with salt water.
Different tank size does play a part.
