Waterproofing wood

i have finished spray painting my wooden hood. would like to find out from the experts

1. can i sand down areas where the finishing is bad and spray again?

2. what can be further done to coat the hood with a waterproof layer?

of course can sand down n respray... thats what they do in factories oso...

use a type of waterproofing sealant lahz... go ask hardware shop

Use some waterproof laquer...xannot remember the ttype, but supposed to harden to be as tough as fibreglass or something...

i think for the hood, u dun really have to worry much....it is not supporting any weight other than itself rite? so y bother? unless u are thinking of using it for 20yrs....hehehehe.....y not look into ways to decrease chances of salt spray onto your hood??

Here is the steps

1) sand down with 250 grid sand paper

2) Clean with damp cloth

3) Brush on laquer or Polyurathane

3) Leave to dry (for polyurathane MUST wait over night)

4) When dry sand again with 1000 grid sand paper

5) Clean with damp cloth

6) Brush on laquer or Polyurathane

Up to you how many coats you want. Personally I use 3 coats.

For hood, the important area to be waterproofing is on the inside.

Especially the gaps around the joints.

I use MAXBOND Sealant (Multipurpose).

There're alot of waterproof paint available.

There is one type of Polyurethane paint for boat (can be found in Home-fix DIY store) should be good for this purpose.

Used it on my HDB main door, which directly under west sun all year round for five years and the door still look new.
