How do I prevent a back flow to my sump

Hi Gurus,

I have bought a 2 ft tank with sump and have improvise my own return by using 1 x eheim 1048. Although the flowrate matches, I notice whenever, I switches off the pump the water from the pipping will flow back to my sump and thus air pockets are created. I have no choice but to suck out the air pockets in order to have the pump running again.

Can anyone here advise me how can I rectify this? I am totally not technically incline, in fact I consider fixing the green plastic pipping to the pump an engineering feat!

Bro, Thanks for the advise on drilling a hole to the elbow. But another question, will it prevent air pockets in the pipping? If not how to rectify.

Any other advise?

another method is to use a check valve, but review shows tat there will still be back flow but slow back flow....wat do u mean by air pocket??

Oh, this happens when I change water and the water drop below the elbow level and if I were to off the pump, air instead of water will be suck into the pipping thus when I on the pump back I have to suck out the air in the pipping to resume flow.

hhhmmm... i roughly get wat u mean...however water change is only done once every 2 weeks(normally) rite?? i don't see a problem with the air pocket thing, i presume it is not much of a problem....yup air will be sucked in but i don't find any problem with that....

one thing i dun understand is y do u have to suck out the air?? i have no problem switching on and off my return pump leh.....maybe your pump is not strong enuf? i am not using a powerfull eheim, i am merely using a atman 105.....no such problem at all...

Hi typrobin,

Dunno leh, everytime when there is air trapped inside the pipping the pump will not work.

Last time when I was using 2213 canister for my planted also same. At the end have to use eheim double tap to lock the water in the pipe while changing filter media.

Now a days the newer canister models all have self priming function to force out the air in the pipes.

Any bros here got any remedy?

wat i did last time with my cannister was to switch the thing on and off several times....i think tat's y it spoilt....hhahahahaha

use a sump loh.....better and easier...
