Confuse with MH Ignition selection

Hi,

Wish to know more of MH Lighting. Read some abt MH Ignition. Why is it that some MH need a control gear to ignite while some only need transformer and capacitor to ignite. What would it be if I wish to have a simple slim type of hood, then which type should be recommended instead of a bulky and heavy stuff.
